About Us
Mary DiOrio, LCSW
I use a lot of positive humor and creativity in my work, and I'm always researching innovative new techniques for helping you make the changes you desire. I find it very rewarding to serve as a strong catalyst for change. I'm committed to supporting you in your goals, and helping you see alternative viewpoints.
I work especially well with adults facing difficult life choices; in addition, I have specialized training with eating disorders and other medical concerns.
I also enjoy helping with family conflicts of all kinds, and have a great deal of experience with clients who are talented and gifted.
Allan F. Chino, Ph.D., ABPP
Through all of my training and experience, I have discovered that healing of mind, body, and spirit truly come from within. Our job is to assist people in finding balance so that true self-healing can take place. So often this reduces to creating kind, welcoming opportunities for people to feel their feelings and examine their relationships. But I also think that there are internal mechanisms for healing -- potentials within each of us -- that are newly available. Whether one is seeking assistance in healing unbalance in physical, emotional, or relationship parts of their lives, those who are ready to heal can now tap into those 'interdimensional' mechanisms and experience remarkable movement toward greater health and happiness.
Kate McNulty, LCSW
I have specialized training in work with couples; I also meet with many individuals to discuss their relationships. I am particularly interested in situations involving relationship decisions, heartbreak, infidelity, and sexual concerns. My background includes over twenty years of experience in social work, so I have learned a variety of techniques for helping people make changes. I often see my best contribution as simply asking useful questions. I like to reflect on the meaning of words, and work especially well with people who are intellectually gifted.
I also enjoy and have had success with helping people who want to develop better social skills in making small talk, dating or just meeting new people.
Catherine Beckett, LCSW
I have been providing individual and family counseling for more than a decade, to clients ranging in age from two to 101. I have particular experience working with young children and teens, as well as coaching parents when tough issues come. I have designed and taught courses in child and adolescent development and mental health for a number of universities, including UC Berkeley and UC Davis. Most of us are challenged by change.
Breaking out of old beliefs and behaviors, even when they are no longer working well, is not easy. I have had a lot of experience with couples and helping people shift to new patterns and regain closeness. Whether doing counseling with adults or play therapy with children, I work collaboratively, and try to balance the use of listening and support with actively offering ideas and strategies; I believe that both are essential to the process. In addition to helping clients reach their counseling goals, my aim is to offer them tools that will continue to be useful long after they have left my office.
Jan Conlin, LCSW
My experience as a clinical social worker, and in my previous career as an elementary and middle school teacher, has exposed me to parents and children of all ages. I have successfully worked with both individuals and families who desire a calmer and more satisfying life.
I practice mindfulness in my own life, and you may wish to address some of your own spiritual interests in our work together (even if you don't know how you'll ever find the time to have a practice!) I believe that all people have the capacity to make healthy decisions for their lives, and I'm very positive about the opportunities we can create together.
By learning to gain better control over strong emotions, and talking clearly about feelings, we find workable solutions. Adult clients experience more serenity and self-confidence. Parents can continue to be an important influence in their children's lives, even as they are becoming more independent. As we get to know each other, we may use a number of awareness techniques and ways of expressing yourself through creative means.
Lesley Upham, M.A.
Through a combination of humor, respect, and genuineness I support my clients in making the changes they are seeking. I bring a lot of enthusiasm to this work and tend to have a very positive outlook that clients tell me they appreciate. I am dedicated to helping my clients identify their strengths, forge an authentic sense of self, and find a positive niche in their communities. I have worked with teens and adults, and am familiar with women's issues as well. I have 8 years experience working in the counseling field, and extensive knowledge of GLBTQ- specific issues. I also have specific training in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
From traditional talk therapy to recommending resources and books, I employ a variety of approaches to counseling. I also especially enjoy working with athletes, and performance issues of all kinds.
Andrew Huff M.A., National Certified Counselor
I use a variety of styles to adapt to individual needs. I believe counseling should be both personal and collaborative in trying to meet the unique needs of the individual.
My philosophy combines existential and practical ideas that reflect the need to have a good balance between our minds and bodies. I am easily approachable and take care to foster an environment of safety and trust. I really enjoy this work and delight in seeing people make the changes they want, or just helping someone to make it through a difficult time.
My areas of interest include mindfulness-based, body-centered approaches to counseling for depression, anxiety, relationship loss, drug and alcohol issues, identity/self-discovery and life transitions. I have had the opportunity to do extensive travel, for both professional training and in order to develop an experiential understanding of cultural diversity.
